What is a shaver socket vs normal?
A shaver socket-outlet with a transformer is called a shaver supply unit. The term shaver supply unit means it is an accessory embodying a shaver transformer.
The transformer of a shaver supply unit is called isolating transformer. This is meant to provide protection against electric shock by electrical separation. The transformer is of the short-circuit proof type that is either inherently or non-inherently. The front of a shaver supply unit is marked with the rated voltage and with the symbol shown left.
Where is the best place for the shaver socket replacement?
The best place to fix the shaver socket is by a mirror or close to the sink.
Do I need an electrician to change/ replace the shaver socket?
Not necessarily, but we do recommend you to hire an experienced electrician to do this.
Can I change/ replace a shaver socket in my bathroom?
Yes, Low voltage shaver sockets should only be used in a bathroom. In accordance with the updated 18
th edition of the IEE Wiring Regulations, it is absolutely safe to install electric shaver sockets in the bathroom making sure the socket is 110v.
Why would shaver socket stop working?
If your fused spur is switched on but the shaver is still not working, there is one more option you need to change/ replace the fuse. Just like a common socket, a fused spur has a fuse incorporated. If it blows, none of the sockets it controls will continue to work until this is replaced.
Does a shaver socket need its own circuit?
In all cases, a circuit protective conductor has to be run to and terminated at the shaver socket-outlet, just as is required for any other point or accessory. A shaver socket-outlet with a transformer is named a shaver supply unit.
Can a shaver socket be wired on a ring main?
Shaver Sockets can be installed by connecting it to a ring main with junction box, or connecting it from an earthed lighting socket.
What are the different methods of wiring a shaver socket?
In terms of wiring up a shaver socket there are two different routes that you can go down:
- Existing lighting circuit: Taking a feed wire from the bathroom lighting circuit to connect to shaver socket. This is generally the most popular method as an existing lighting circuit should be present in most bathrooms.
- Existing socket circuit: A feed wire is taken from an existing socket circuit and then run to an FCU. A feed is then taken from the FCU to the shaver socket.
Can you plug anything into a shaver socket?
Usually, outlets read as “Shavers Only”.
How to do a damaged shaver socket replacement?
A damaged shaver socket replacement is often needed due to overloading or a loose connection in the plug. Do not plug any appliances back in without solving this problem first or it will happen again.
You should never take risks with the electrical safety. Before you start any type of electrical work, follow these safety precautions:
- Switch off the main power at the consumer unit / fuse box. Isolate the circuit you plan to work on by removing the circuit fuse.
- Or switch off the breaker and lock it if you can – put a note on the unit to advise you’re working on the circuit.
- Check the circuit is dead with a shaver socket tester or voltage tester / meter for lighting circuits.
- Unscrew the shaver socket faceplate and pull the faceplate forward
- Loosen the screws at the terminals and free the wires
- Cut back the cores and strip the ends
- Cover the earth core wiring with an extra length of green and yellow wire sleeving if it’s exposed
- Earth the metal back boxes
- Fit the new faceplate
- Test it
