What happens if my emergency electrician is unable to resolve the issue there and then?

Our main aim is to always resolve an issue when you call us out. However, there could be circumstances where this is not possible, due to the need for new parts which are not available in an emergency situation. If this is the case, we will ensure that your home is completely safe, and will provide you with advice as to how to keep you and your family comfortable until we can come back and solve the problem.

Your lights are not working? What should you do?

Always turn off the power to the circuit from the circuit breaker box before touching a bare lightbulb socket.

What are the most common problems with ceiling light fixtures controlled by wall switches?

Apparent problems with a ceiling light are usually traced to an issue that is interrupting the flow of electricity from the wall switch to the light fixture. Diagnosing the problem will depend on whether the light bulb does not light up at all, or if it is flickering intermittently.

Why do I have power but no lights?

This happens when too many appliances are connected to one circuit, which means not enough current is available for each appliance or light

Why is one room lights not working? Why Is the Power Out in Just One Room?

The localized outage could be caused by a tripped circuit breaker. This can happen if a circuit is overloaded or has been spiked by a defective appliance. Unplug all of the appliances in the room, and then check your breaker.

Why has my lights tripped?

Circuit breakers can trip due to any number of problems such as water damage, frayed wiring, worn fittings, bad connections, faulty transformers or simply an electrical load that is more than your system can handle.

Why is my light circuit not working but not tripped? Can A Circuit Breaker Fail Without Tripping?

A circuit breaker can fail without tripping and is an indication it needs to be replaced. It can also mean there are wiring issues with the circuit itself, such as exposed/loose wiring, overheating, and unregulated voltage.

Why are all my upstairs lights not working?

Most homes have two lighting circuits, one for upstairs and one for downstairs. Check if one of the circuit breakers has tripped (turned off). If it has, reset it by switching it back on, the lights should now work as normal. If resetting the circuit breaker did not work, then it is recommended that you call an electrician.

How do you tell if a fuse is blown in your house?

Remove the fuse from its holder. In some cases, you may need a small screwdriver to unscrew the fuse holder cap. Check the fuse wire. If there is a visible gap in the wire or a dark or metallic smear inside the glass then the fuse is blown and needs to be replaced.

What does a burned-out bulb look like?

The inside of the bulb will be a little blackened.

What to do with any exposed wiring?

Any exposed wiring, indoors or outdoors, needs to be assessed and repaired by a professional technician. Exposed wires can be life-threatening if touched and are a potential fire hazard.

Why do light switches buzz or don’t work?

Buzzing or dead light switches indicate that there is either a problem with how they were connected, with the wiring or that the switch is faulty and needs to be replaced.

What causes a dead socket/ outlets?

Over time, wiring can loosen or split, resulting in a loss of electrical power to an outlet. If you suspect there’s bad wiring in your home, contact a professional electrician for rewiring services as soon as possible. If the outlet is dead, the fault could lie in the wiring, the circuit, the outlet itself or it could be due to a tripped fuse.

Why my electrical circuit keeps tripping?

When the electrical circuit keeps tripping, resulting in a power outage to part of or the whole property, you need to contact an electrician. The fault could be due to: an overloaded circuit, a faulty appliance, a short circuit, an arc fault, an old or worn-out circuit breaker.

How do you fix a short circuit in a house?

Locate the exact location of the short circuit within the wiring system. Make a new wire to replace the old and damaged one. Remove some insulation from the ends of the new wires and solder them to the current wires. Ensure the wires are safely installed and turn on the circuit breaker to test if successful.

Is it the appliance that is faulty?

Have you double-checked the appliance is working correctly? To ensure the appliance isn’t faulty, find something else you know is working correctly such as a kettle or phone charger. You can then plug the appliance into the same socket and switch it on.

Why has my socket stopped working?

Common causes when a wall socket stops working include: Failed internal socket connections, which is common in older outlets that no longer snugly hold plugs. A tripped circuit breaker that cuts power to the wall socket.

Why I can smell of burning from the electric shower?

The smell of burning in your home is never a good sign, and that goes for a burning smell coming from your electric shower. It’s usually an issue with the wiring, which you’ll need to get fixed as soon as you can. Until fixed stop using your shower immediately.

How do I fix my electric shower that won’t start?

If there is no power to the shower, you should check that the fuse hasn’t tripped on the fuse board. The shower will be on its own circuit and will be labelled. If the shower is not working at all, check that the shower switch is turned on at the pull cord.

How do I know if my light switch is faulty?

If your light switch does not turn on or off as normal or you may notice that the toggle or switch head moves or does not stay in its place, the switch is faulty and requires to be replaced.

How to replace a broken light switch?

Before you start any sort of electrical work, you have to follow the following safety precautions. You need to make sure that you switch off the mains power at the consumer unit or fuse box. Then isolate the circuit you plan to work on by removing the circuit fuse. Switch off the breaker and lock it if you can. Attach a note to the unit to advise you are working on the circuit. Check the circuit is dead with a socket tester or voltage tester/meter for lighting circuits. These confirm whether circuits are dead and safe to work on. Check all finished work with a socket tester.

Why is my smoke alarm going off for no reason?

The most likely reason smoke detectors go off unexpectedly is that people aren’t changing the batteries in them often enough.

How do I stop my smoke alarm from beeping?

Reset the Alarm • Turn off the power to the smoke alarm at the circuit breaker. • Remove the smoke alarm from the mounting bracket and disconnect the power. • Remove the battery. • Press and hold the test button for at least 15 seconds. • Reconnect the power and reinstall the battery.

What is least likely to trigger a smoke detector into creating a false alarm?

Correct use of extractor fans and the closing of doors between designated cooking areas and detector heads can further prevent false alarms.

Can faulty wiring cause smoke detectors to go off?

With most smoke alarms that function on AC or AC/DC power, a loose hot wire connection can intermittently disconnect power to the smoke alarm. The most common result of a loose connection is for the smoke alarm to “go off,” making a beeping or chirping noise.

Can I replace a heated towel rail myself?

If the towel rail is going to be plugged into a power point, then you can easily install the towel rail yourself.

How do you know if a heating element is burnt out?

Remove the cover panel(s) from the front of the heater and then disconnect the wires from the heating element terminals. Using a continuity tester, available from electrical supply houses, place one test probe on each of the element terminals. If there is no continuity, the element is defective and must be replaced.

What is the most common cause of RCD tripping?

RCD tripping occurs when the device switches off its own power when it detects an electrical circuit fault.

Can I replace the faulty RCD myself?

Only an electrician can replace RCD switches which are defected but any person can test RCD switches.

Why is my doorbell not working? And how to fix it?

In many cases, a malfunctioning doorbell is due to disconnected wires behind the doorbell button. There are two wires behind the outdoor button, and they may become loose or disconnected. A professional electrician can test the two wires to determine if they create sound when they are touched together.

Do I need an electrician to replace an outside light?

While you can certainly hire a professional electrician to install your outdoor lighting (and if you’re not very experienced, we recommend doing so!), you can install outdoor lighting yourself if you make sure that you follow the correct safety precautions.

How much does an electrician charge to install an outside light?

The installation of new lighting circuits and outdoor lights must be done by an electrician. The price mainly varies depending on the job’s requirements. It depends if you need drilling through brickwork or running meters of cable, also the number of lights is very important, etc.

What causes a fan to stop working?

This could be because the circuit breaker has tripped or is off. If the circuit breaker works fine, it could be a problem with loose wiring and connections. Your ceiling fan could also stop working due to internal defects namely shot ball bearings or an overheated motor.

What causes fan to burn out?

Buildup of dust, dirt, or debris. Electrical problems, including an excessive voltage supply.
