What are the types of bathroom fan switches?

There are two main methods for turning a bathroom extractor fan on and off. You can either wire it into the bathroom lights so that when they are switched on the fan comes on at the exact same time you can wire it to its own switch.

Do I need an isolating switch for my bathroom fan?

You only need an isolator for the fan, if you want to be able to isolate the fan. There is currently no law or Regulation stating you must have an isolator.

Can I install a fan with the switch off?

Do not start drilling, wiring, or installing the ceiling fan without turning off the electricity first. Turn off the electricity on the circuit breaker to which the new electrical work will connect.

Does a kitchen extractor fan need an isolator?

Yes!

Why is my extractor fan not switching on?

If your extractor fan is not functioning correctly, then the first thing you should do is to check the power supply. Then you need to make sure that the fan is plugged in and receiving power. If the power supply is fine, next you should check for any blockages that could be preventing airflow.

Where should a fan isolator switch be located?

The usual place is above the door as this is a switch not aimed at being used as often as light switches etc therefor putting it above the door out of the way makes sense.

How to perform a fan isolator switch replacement ?

Extractor Fans with an integral timer or timed switch need a 3-core and earth supply to allow the unit to run on after a light is switched off. • Isolate Power: Before anything is done at all the very first job is to isolate the power to the circuit you will be working on! • Install Fan Isolation Switch/3-Pole Switch: Once isolated, the next job is to install the fan isolation switch/3-pole switch. If you are using a standard 3-pole pull cord switch, the switch is generally fixed to the ceiling and wired down from the top. However, this is normally when it is being installed in an upstairs bathroom and there is decent access to the top of the ceiling from the loft. Once the pattress box is installed, you must cut a suitable length of cable with plenty of slack to run from the existing light ceiling rose you are taking your power from down to the isolation switch. Strip both ends of the cable to suitable lengths (manufacturer should state this in their instructions, if not see our stripping cable project here) and connect the switch end cable to the correct terminals. In this case as 3-core cable is being used this will be the black wire to the permanent live (the grey wire to neutral (add some blue tape or sleeve), the brown to switched live and the earth to the earth (make sure earth sleeve is added first) as in the image below.
