What are the main types of electric hobs?
There are several different styles and types of electric hobs. However, there are five main types of electric hobs you can choose from such as electric, ceramic, gas, induction and domino.
Do all kitchen hobs need to be hardwired?
Most of the electric kitchen hobs require to be hardwired, therefore they do not include a plug. All these hobs have to be installed by an experience electrician that dispose of proper tools, you will not be able to simply add a plug yourself. At the same time, you must not cut the plug off an appliance that comes with a plug and attempt to hardwire it.

Can a gas hob be changed to electric?
If you are upgrading your gas hob to an electric hob you may need to upgrade you domestic electrical setup. Also, in case your new hob draws more current than the old hob, then you may need a bigger cable.
You must also consider the fact that changing from a gas hob to an electric one can be expensive. Generally cooking with gas is much cheaper than electricity. However, in the case when your kitchen is designed for electric appliances only, it is most likely to cost you extra to re-route a gas line. While gas hobs can be traditionally used, we find that the induction hobs are generally better performance wise.
What type of socket does my electric hob need?
The size of fuse that you need for your electric hob will be requested by what type of hob you bought. If you purchased a less powerful hob that uses around 2.99KW or less, you will need to install a 13-amp socket. However, if you purchased a hob that consumes around 3KW or more, you will need to install a 32-amp socket.
Households in the U.K. mostly have a supply of 230V. If the appliance you have has a power of 3,000W (3kW) or less, then you can plug it in installing a 13A fuse. In case your appliance’s power is more than 3,000W you will need to hardwire it.
A gas appliance also requires to be connected to electricity in order for it to ignite. Also it needs electricity for all other extras such as a clock, lights and timer.
Can I install an electric hob myself or do I need an electrician to do it?
The installation of an electric hob can be difficult if you intend to do it yourself. We recommend you to hire an experienced electrician for this job. There are only a few details you must consider before your electrician arrives. You need these to make sure the installation process goes smoothly and fast. You need to ensure that there is enough space in your kitchen. Also, you need to ensure you have enough space to spare behind and on the other sides of the hob to ensure proper ventilation.
How long does it take to fit an electric hob?
The installation of your new electric hob should take a couple of hours only. This may vary from job to job depending if you need to un-install your old hob, if you need to replace the hardwire cable with a new one, if the socket needs to be repositioned etc.
What cable is best for connecting a hob?
When you order an electric hob this will most likely come with the cable included. In the situation where your hob will not come with a cable or if you need to replace your hob’s cable then the right one is for 6mm to 10mm depending on your hob’s amperage.
What type of isolating switch do I need for my electric hob?
There are two options when it comes to isolating switches: a double pole and a single pole. They are both very safe in the event of a short circuit. The single pole switch will disconnect the live current in the wire. The double pole switch is different as it will disconnect both the neutral wire and also the live wire. This is also very important as the neutral wire can become energized by the live wire at times. We recommend you to install the double pole switch as this way you can add extra safety.
What is hot zone for hob installation?
The area between the hob and hood is known as the ‘hot zone’. This zone must be clear of any plug sockets or any sort of flammable materials such as wallpapers, plug sockets, window sills, any curtains and blinds.
We also recommend you to leave a gap of at least 65cm between your hob and the hob hood or ceiling. It has to be clear of hazards before installing it, otherwise we may not be able to proceed with the installation as a safety measure.
What size circuit breaker do I need for a hob on consumer unit?
A panel’s total amperage is in scripted near or on the main circuit breaker, which controls all the circuits in a panel. All circuit breakers should all have numbers on them to show the correct amperage. A good couple examples are 6A for lights, and 32A for sockets. Electrician have to label them so if you find a circuit breaker marked with 40A and/or a label with the word hob ton it, this is a good indicator that you already have the needed capacity for a more powerful hob.
The electricity cables in the U.K. come in standard sizes: they are typically, 1-1.5mm2Â for lights, 2.5-4mm2Â for sockets, and 6-10mm2Â for hobs and showers.
